![]() ![]() Agent: Molly Friedrich, Friedrich Agency. ![]() This powerful environmental call to arms proposes that for optimal well-being, regular doses of nature are not only recommended but required. She also reveals how city planners can successfully bring nature into the urban environment. Within the U.S., she finds programs using nature to help kids with ADHD and veterans with PTSD. Williams brings some intriguing observations to light in the forests of South Korea, for instance, she learns that time among the cypress trees reduces stress and lowers blood pressure. What are new, however, are current and ongoing studies by scientists (many of whom readers will encounter in these pages), who are using forests and natural landscapes as laboratories to learn more about how nature affects human health. The idea that the open air enhances creativity and outlook isn’t new Williams traces it as far back as Aristotle. soon, she found herself yearning for the mountains, and feeling disoriented and depressed. ![]() Her curiosity was piqued when she and her family moved from Boulder, Colo., to Washington, D.C. Research shows that spending time in nature can boost cognition, reduce anxiety, improve mood, and enhance creative thinking. ![]() Outside magazine contributor Williams ( Breasts) writes frequently about the environment in this extensively researched book, her travels take her to Japan, Korea, Singapore, Scotland, and elsewhere in search of hard evidence that exposure to nature causes positive changes in the brain. ![]()

![]() Most of the comments I read online about this book before its release had to do with whether or not J. Published: DC, 2010 $19.99 ( HC), $12.99 ( TPB)įrom the moment it was first announced, and nearly every time I’ve heard mention of Superman: Earth One since, one word has come to mind: “baggage.”īecause that’s what almost every person who talks about this book seems to bring to the table, right? Baggage. ![]() ![]() ![]() After eight years of research, Donald Low, the leading expert on Burnss songs, has collected together 375 songs. Fans of singers like Rickie Lee Jones and the McGarrigle Sisters will appreciate Reader's boldness and earthy yet beautiful delivery. Song-writing was Burnss life-long passion. But Burns, like Shakespeare or the standards of the Great American Songbook, is sturdy and versatile enough to shine under a variety of approaches. Reader and her collaborators worked hard to retain the off-the-people spirit of these songs of passion, protest and festivities. "We are all Robert's babies." This album, released in 2008, features 18 of Burns songs, including "My Love Is Like A Red Red Rose," "Brose and Butter," "John Anderson My Jo," "Ye Jacobites," "Green Grow the Rashes O," "Ye Banks and Braes O' Bonnie Doon" and "Auld Lang Syne." Many of these songs will be familiar even to those listeners who didn't associate the words and melodies with Burns. ![]() Later she learned to appreciate that Burns was a "spokesman for the glorious in the ordinary, the sublime in the mundane." And Reader eventually came to see the poet's influence everywhere in Scotland. She learned some of his poetry but associated him with high culture, something slightly remote from her life. As Reader tells it, the move saved her life by not only removing her from a semi-blighted urban predicament, but also by introducing her to what she's described as "an alternative Scottish beauty and language." In her passion about music and arts she learned about Burns. Scottish singer Eddi Reader grew up in Glasgow but moved to the Ayreshire countryside (birthplace of Robert Burns) when she was a teenager. ![]() ![]() ![]() It does get quite violent at some points and the description gets quite gruesome but its fine. Moving on to the good things i enjoyed the ending very much but leaves you on a big cliff hanger so make sure u have the next book with u. Another thing was there was never a time to breath it was always straight on to another major thing in the story which could get annoying as u would want to process one thing before moving on. Also mare in this book has changed a lot from red queen and her personality is completely different and pushes away quite a few of the main characters. ![]() As I really enjoyed red queen I naturally wanted to read glass sword I found it very quick to action and got straight to the plot but it didn't include much character development and because there was quite a few new characters in this story we could of done with some more detail. ![]() ![]() ![]() The amazing success of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical Hamilton has stoked an extraordinary resurgence of interest in Alexander Hamilton, the brilliant and divisive founder who profoundly shaped the American republic. More than 30 years later, the chest is discovered by Pete Saubers, a boy whose family is in dire financial straits after his father fell victim to the villain of King’s previous thriller, Mr Mercedes. Hyperventilating with anticipation at the prospect of reading Jimmy’s story, but aware of the forces of law on his trail, he buries his treasure in an old chest, only to end up with a life sentence for another crime. A man who could do that doesn’t deserve to live,” says Morris, before fleeing the scene, notebooks and cash and (somewhat briefly, sadly for them) accomplices in tow. “You created one of the greatest characters in American literature, then shit on him. ![]() Jimmy is “an American icon of despair in a land of plenty”, according to Time he’s the star of Rothstein’s era-defining “Runner” trilogy, and coiner of the slogan that adorns the T-shirts of students across the US: “Shit don’t mean shit.” ![]() ![]() But, really, he’s heard rumours of the dozens of notebooks Rothstein has filled with his writing in the decades since he retired from public life entirely, and is desperate to find a new ending for Rothstein’s creation, Jimmy Gold. Morris has come to Rothstein’s remote New Hampshire house with a pair of thugs, ostensibly to rob the elderly author. ![]() ![]() Perhaps the best-remembered line from “Song of Myself” is “I am large, I contain multitudes,” and Crandall hits this point home in the diversity of her subjects. In these videos, Whitman is recited in the most unlikely places: in a drug court, on a baseball field, at a skate park, on a farm, in a plane.Ĭrandall said she had the idea of capturing Southern voices reading a poem by a “dead Yankee” to try to “actualize that we are all writing this poem together.” ![]() The result is a deeply affirmative, wise, strange and sometimes funny set of 52 mini-documentaries or episodes, each dedicated to a different verse. For her new project, “ Whitman in Alabama,” Crandall spent two years crisscrossing the state and asking Alabamians to recite Walt Whitman’s iconic poem “ Song of Myself.” The goal: to learn more about the people who lived there - and also to find the threads that tie them, and all of us, together. Are we a nation divided? Filmmaker Jennifer Crandall doesn’t think so. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As the Service fails to modernize after 9-11, the book tracks the alarming security breaches that culminate in a Keystone Cops era for the Service during the Obama years. Spanning eleven presidencies, Zero Fail follows the missteps of the agency that began with the drunken outing the night before the Kennedy assassination, to the Service’s rebuilding and renewed commitment to never let another president die and its heroism in averting numerous tragedies.
